Preview: Pocketwizard FlexTT5 Unboxing & Hands-On

The Pocketwizard FlexTT5 units for Nikon have arrived at FlashRAW headquarters, and we thought we’d bring you a quick unboxing of the new units. While Canon users have had the FlexTT5 for a while, Nikon users are getting a late Christmas. So, if you haven’t checked out these new Pocketwizard units yet, here’s a look at what you can expect.

What’s In the Box:

The Pocketwizard FlexTT5 includes the bare essentials. A pair of Energizer AA batteries, a warranty card, and a USB cord for the unit. Also included is a quick-start guide.

Initial Impressions:

The new Pocketwizard FlexTT5 is huge. In a world of increasing miniaturization, the new transceiver is actually pretty massive next to the competition.

All in all, the build quality is good. Like their other offerings, the foot is plastic, and it features a lock-down wheel. In addition, screwing down the wheel not only secures the transceiver with a friction lock, but it also lowers a locking pin to the hotshoe. Nice.

While the Nikon AWL/CLS system has been somewhat legendary on its own, we’re excited by the promised holy grail of small, off-camera flash: wireless freedom with full TTL control.

We’ll be bringing you a full review of the FlexTT5 and MiniTT1 systems for Nikon, so stay tuned.
